Illustrated Maps

As I mentioned at the start, one part of the brief requires us to produce ‘maps’ for each word, roughly showing where the word is and whats around it. Now that I have all my words, I’ve drawn up my maps using watercolour pencils, and scanned them into to my least favourite program Illustrator, to add all the map features, street names etc. You can also see this as a separate page.

While trying to purchase a train ticket late on Wednesday night, the ticket booths had closed and an electronic sign had been placed at the window that read “Please consider the comfort of OTHERS when travelling”. A bright red, LED moving sign. PERFECT. This could provide a nice contrast from the other words so far… I will use this instead of the panted version! It also goes with the inherent colour scheme in all my words, black, white, reds and yellows.
WORDS OF WISDOM
•June 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment29/5/09
I actually set aside one entire day to go out and find wisdom in some way, shape or form depicted within the urban environment. I thought.. stained glass church windows, cemeteries, health institutions, and found nothing or the sort. It was in Dymocks North Sydney that I came across this massive book titled “Wisdom” sitting on the top shelf. Perfect for a printed word. Well, I didn’t really have an option seeing as though I could find it nowhere else!
“OTHERS”… I found it!

Started working on my hand lettering the other day, choosing “influence” because it is near impossibe to find anywhere in the urban environment. I was experimenting with lino printing and paint at first, however I was already utilising a similar style for “your” or “will”. Instead I went for something a little more raw, with a grid and texture to show how the font has been built or created (hence urban). Below are some fonts I used for inspiration, followed by my final hand-lettered word.
Home Remedy
Pointy
Love Ya Like A Sister
Walk Around The Block
Accents Euro
WILL

I have some good photos for ‘your’, so for the past few days I have started looking around for ‘will’. Once again, it wasn’t hard to find, but I narrowed it down to these 3 below.
This was taken outside my work one day as I walked out. A painted warning sign, it definitely had the most interesting texture and grungy feel
This is in the St Ives Shopping Centre lift, a metal engraving displaying
emergency lift procedures.
I found this hand painted sign on the wall of a small supermarket up the road from where
I live it too has a nice personality to it.
YOUR

So far I’ve been concentrating on looking at each word one by one within the urban environment, which is working well because I am only trying to observe one instead of 5 words at a time, therefore a more observant and targeted eye.
Your is first off… it is EVERYWHERE. In print, on signs. I think his should be one of my more interesting “words” or applications in my final quote, and after a couple of weeks I have a few to chose from. The last 4 are my top rated..
Shop window, printed on glass
